Asbestos General Awareness training is required for all University of Washington employees, except for those employees who must attend the 2-hour Asbestos Worker Awareness class. This class provides a 30 minute classroom session of what asbestos is, where it can be found on campus, and what you should do if you encounter damaged building materials that could contain asbestos. You may take the short Online General Asbestos Awareness Training. This course satisfies the regulatory requirement for every UW employee to receive annual refresher training in general asbestos awareness. It is interchangeable with the classroom session."

Any employee who frequently lifts over 20 pounds as part of the job is required to have this training. It covers how to reduce the risk of back problems through increased fitness, proper lifting techniques, and improved body mechanics. the class meets state requirements for lifting training.

This class is strongly recommended for Principal Investigators and their staff who are working with infectious agents and recombinant DNA. It covers the review and approval process for biological agents at the University of Washington and the requirements governing their use (e.g. facilities, equipment, practices).

For beginners as well as those who wish to renew their CPR certification. Identify when CPR is necessary, how to administer CPR, the ABC's of emergency care, and practice on the CPR mannequin. Provided as a community service by the Seattle Fire Department Medic II; this two-hour training is FREE. (Certification is good for two years.)

This class is presented on request (dependant upon size of class) by the Department of Emergency Management. It includes a review of geological activity in the Pacific Northwest with tips on how to prepare for an earthquake and reduce risk of personal injury and property damage both at home and at work.

NOTE: April 22nd 9:45 am is the Statewide DROP-COVER-HOLD drill. This is a great class to prepare for the drill is presented by Siri-Elizabeth McLean of the UW Emergency Management Office.

A health and safety course for field researchers and those who collect animals. Includes food and drinking water safety, rabies, hantavirus, bubonic plague and fleas, Lyme disease and other tickborne diseases, waterborne disease hazards, West Nile virus, toxic plants, dangerous animals, venomous insects, field hygiene, etc.

Any employee who is expected to use a fire extinguisher in the event of an emergency is required to have this training. Fire prevention, emergency and evacuation procedures, hands-on fire extinguisher training. Annual refresher training is required.

First Aid and CPR certification are offered through a course presented by E.M.T.A., an association of emergency medical care providers and trainers. Completion of the course provides a State Department of Labor and Industries approved certificate that is valid for two years. Heart attacks, fractures, respiratory failure, CPR, environmental emergencies (heat stroke, hypothermia, bites and stings, etc.), shock, scene management, and the Good Samaritan law are discussed. Training is $44 per person: budget number or check must be in our office before the training begins. No refunds without 48 hours notice of cancellation. This training is required for crews that work in the field.

All University employees who operate forklifts must be trained and certified (WAC 296-863-600). This course covers maintenance, inspection, and safe operation of powered industrial trucks. It is an operator safety course. Attendees must already have training and experience in driving a forklift. A written test and a driving test must be successfully completed to receive an operator's license. A budget number is needed for the $24 text book. The individual driving tests will be scheduled separately.

Employees working for departments that own forklifts (material handling equipment) and who have been coaching/training new operators so that they can pass the operator safety class can be certified as evaluators. Evaluators can renew forklift driver certification by observing/critiquing their driving skills. A written test and a driving test must be successfully completed to receive Forklift Evaluator certification. There is a $24.00 supply fee. Refresher training is required every three years. The individual driving tests will be scheduled separately.

UW Hazard Communication training is required for all employees. This course is for trainers who conduct HazCom training for their non-laboratory departments. The class covers an overview of the Employer Chemical Hazard Communication Standard (WAC 296-800-170), how to read and interpret MSDSs, labeling, and how to prepare and present your own training.

A required course for all employees who work on electrical or mechanical equipment that could unexpectedly start up, causing injury or release hazardous energy. This equipment must be locked out before work can begin. The class covers lockout procedures, documentation, and special procedures such as when locks can't be used or must be removed.

This class discusses chemical hazards and outlines personal protection, chemical storage, MSDSs, chemical disposal, and accident prevention and response in the laboratory. It also highlights EH&S resources for laboratory staff. This course partially fulfills state training requirements for laboratory staff who work with chemicals. It is strongly recommended for all new employees, and it can be taken at any time as refresher training. Supervisors, PIs, and others responsible for laboratory safety are also required to attend the Laboratory Safety Standard Compliance training.

Individuals who ship hazardous materials (such as chemicals, compressed gasses, and infectious substances) are required to attend the course in Shipping and Transporting Hazardous Materials.

The MyChem chemical inventory and MSDS database replaces the Laboratory Safety System (LSS) course. This hands-on computer class teaches you how to access this web database, maintain chemical inventories, view and print the Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDSs), and locate surplus chemicals in the campus chemical exchange. A UWNetID and MyChem Access Account are required for the class. The online registration form includes data fields for both the class registration and the account application.

Employees who need to wear respirators on the job are required to attend this training prior to using respirators. It covers the selection, care, maintenance, and proper procedures for use. Individual fit-testing is performed after training (typically the same day). The Respirator Request Form and Respirator Medical Evaluation are required prior to training and fit-testing. A required course for those who use and set up scaffolding. Covers the nature of scaffold hazards; correct procedures for protection from the hazards; proper use of scaffolds; design criteria and maximum load capacities of scaffolds; requirements of Washington Administrative Codes (WAC); and also for scaffold erectors, correct procdures for erecting, dissembling different types of scaffolds.

It meets the Department of Transportation (DOT) and International Air Transportation (IATA) requirements for packaging and labeling, terminology, and preparation of documentation.
