Review and Approval of Research
A Research Project Hazard Assessment must be submitted to EH&S if any of the following are used:
- Biohazards, which include:
- Pathogenic organisms (bacteria, ricksettia, fungi, prions, protozoa, and other parasites).
- Plants, animals or animal waste materials, which contain or may contain hazardous characteristics including pathogenic organisms.
- Human and nonhuman primate tissue, body fluid, and cell culture (primary or continuous).
- Recombinant DNA
- Hazardous materials in animal studies
New Projects:
Submit a Research Project Hazard Assessment (RPHA) to EH&S for review and approval prior to starting new research. Approved projects are issued an approval letter and BUA number.
On-going Projects:
RPHAs must be renewed on a 1 or 3 year cycle from the date specified in the original letter of approval.
Significant changes to existing research:
A new RPHA must be submitted for review and approval prior to starting work with any hazardous materials, agents, or processes under consideration.
Institutional Biosafety Committee Approval:
Research requiring Institutional Biosafety Committee review and approval must be coordinated with the Research and Biological Safety Office and requires additional time for committee review.
